Magical Iceland - 5 days family itinarery

Our Family adventures in Iceland was booked in January for travel in August. A fantastic experience in the land of Ice and Fire, 4 nights /5 days of stunning landscapes and fun filled activities. We created a beautiful itinerary with a private driver/local guide and some great unique hotels experience. Hope this inspire you to visit this truly amazing country.

Day 1

From the airport, we had booked a car to collect us and drive us to our first destination. Blue Lagoon - a  geothermal hotel spa located in a lava field, 5km from Grindavik, about 20 km from Keflavik  airpot.

It’s truly mesmerizing location. The milky blue water is due to its high silica content. The silica create a soft white mud at the bottom of the lake. The mud, the water rich in salt and algae, the warm water temperature create a very interesting and healing spa experience.

Blue Lagoon offers two option of hotels (Blue Lagoon Retreat and Silica Hotel ), after some research online we opted for the Silica Hotel. We had no regret with our choice, Silica was beautiful and a more private option for us. We loved that Silica Hotel has it’s own private lagoon which is available to hotel guest only. Great hospitality, lovely breakfast and minimal efficient design, we definitely enjoyed our stay.

Day 2

From Blue Lagoon our guide picked us up to start the beautiful drive around The Golden Circle. Iceland iconic drive features some uniques sights worth a visit. Don’t miss Geysir, a geothermal area with Strokkur hot spring that spout up boiling water every 5 to 8 minutes. Always an exciting and spectacular phenomena.

Must also stop at Thingvellir, a Unesco world heritage site, known for it’s amazing history and geology. Perfect short hike around the park. On the way stop at Gullfoss, stunning two level waterfall.

In the afternoon, we had booked a nature walk with horse. Icelandic horses are so sweet, small but mighty strong. We really enjoyed the experience, a lovely way to explore Iceland diverse landscapes.

After a full day of outdoor adventures, we were ready for our next hotel stay. A truly unique retreat, Torfhus is a gem. A blend of authentic Icelandic style and relaxed eco-luxury, inspired by the architecture of the Icelandic Viking farm. We book a cosy two bedrooms torfhus with the private outdoor basalt stone hot pool. This geothermal pool is a relaxing treat after a day out and about discovering Iceland. The retreat offers a beautiful authentic Icelandic culinary journey. A delicious set menu prepared with the freshest Icelandic ingredients in a creative and passionate way.

Day 3

On our next day, our guide drove to the South Coast of Iceland. The journey included some beautiful stops along the way. Like the very impressive waterfalls of Skógarfoss and Seljalandsfoss where you can walk behind the veil of water plunging down 60 meters from the overhanging cliff.

We made it to the coast, to Reynisfjara black sand beach with it's basalt columns, forming massive walls and caves. It’s stunning! You might be lucky to see some puffins - is a migratory bird that lives most of its life way out at sea. It comes to Iceland in April/May to nest and moves back out to sea in August/September.

After lunch (our guide was great at finding little restaurants along the journey) we got ourself ready for a fun adrenaline adventure! A private buggy ride on a Black Beach - so much fun. The Vehicles were sturdy, easy to drive and such a great option to experience the Icelandic nature in a different way. we got to ride along the beach, crossing some streams and enjoying the rush of adrenaline swooshing around with the Ocean on one hand and the mountains and glaciers on the other.

Day 4

After another lovely night at Torfhus Retreat, we enjoyed our breakfast and packed our bags for another fun adventure. This time were heading up to a glacier! Even in summer it’s possible do snowmobile tours. Operators create tracks for safety. We booked a private tour , and loved the experience.

The transfer to the Langjökull glacier is an adventure in itself. It takes you up into the wilderness of Iceland where there are no houses or people. When we arrived up on the glacier a specialized guide drove us to the basecamp up on the Langjökull glacier. The massive Ice cap stretches far and wide and it is truly an adventure to be able to swoosh over it with a snowmobile. Warm overalls, helmets, balaclavas and mittens are provided of course for comfort and safety.

After our snowmobile adventure, it was time for us to drove to Reykjavik for our last night in Iceland. About 3 hours drive and we arrived at our hotel downtown just by the Harbour. We booke at the Edition Reykjavik, a well located, cool vibes, easy urban chic hotel. We spent the evening walking the small streets, checking out little shops and enjoyed a lovely dinner at Monkeys. Close by, we walked by the beautiful church -Hallgrimskirkja, 74.5 meters tall, it is the largest church in Iceland and among the tallest structures in the country. It has been described as having become an important symbol for Iceland's national identity since its completion in 1986.

Day 5

Sad to say goodbye to beautiful Iceland.

Before heading to the airport located about 50km away from our hotel, we decided to do one more stop on the way. Just before reaching the airport we made a pit stop at The Viking Museum. It’s small, bit basic but cool to see a replica of a viking ship.

Fantastic trip to Iceland, we all agreed, we need to be back to see more and during the winter season for another totally different experience.
