Festival of Lights

Diwali is celebrated by Hindus in India and all around the world sometime between mid October and mid November. It is the Hindu New Year and is either a 3-day or 5-days holiday. It is a beautiful and colourful holiday.

I love traditional celebration with lovely story... In order to welcome the new year, homes are cleaned and window left wide open to welcome in Lakshmi, the Hindi goddess of wealth. It is also believed that she cannot enter a house which is not lit up. Little clay lamps called "diyas" are place around the house to show the way to the goddess. For this reason Diwali is also known as the Festival of Lights.

In India, Diwali is celebrated with special food, presents are exchanged and new clothes and jewellery are worn to parties. Fireworks are also part of the festivities and are believed to warn off evil spirits.
